The DNC opened it’s 2020 Democratic Convention last night and the evening’s crescendo was Michelle Obama’s rousing and passionate speech. She talked about the pain Americans are feeling, and gave her first-hand account of the immense power of the presidency, concluding that Donald Trump is in over his head, failing to meet the moment with his inadequate response to the coronavirus pandemic. She also gave this chilling warning:
So if you take one thing from my words tonight, it is this: if you think things cannot possibly get worse, trust me, they can; and they will if we don’t make a change in this election. If we have any hope of ending this chaos, we have got to vote for Joe Biden like our lives depend on it.

Almost as important, and even more chilling, was a video released yesterday by Republican Voters Against Trump featuring Trump’s former Department of Homeland Security Chief of Staff, Miles Taylor. Taylor will be voting for Joe Biden in November and is sounding yet another alarm about Trump’s dangerous incompetence and dereliction of duty, saying Trump “governed by whim”. Here’s the video from YouTube:
Taylor also published an op-ed in the Washington Post yesterday going into more detail about his experiences in Trump’s White House:
Top DHS officials were regularly diverted from dealing with genuine security threats by the chore of responding to these inappropriate and often absurd executive requests, at all hours of the day and night. One morning it might be a demand to shut off congressionally appropriated funds to a foreign ally that had angered him, and that evening it might be a request to sharpen the spikes atop the border wall so they’d be more damaging to human flesh (“How much would that cost us?”). Meanwhile, Trump showed vanishingly little interest in subjects of vital national security interest, including cybersecurity, domestic terrorism and malicious foreign interference in U.S. affairs.

If you had any doubts that Trump’s flawed personality spawned a White House that was a dysfunctional mess, the video and op-ed will dispel them. Both Miles Taylor and Michelle Obama made the same point: another four years of Trump will be a disaster on multiple fronts, from incompetence to the destruction of our institutions to graft and corruption.
There have been many stories recently of Republican operatives who’ve abandoned Trump and thrown in with Biden. But it’s important to note that many average Republican Americans are also horrified by Trump. My wife is from the deep South, and her aunt is married to a man whose family has been in the American South for many generations. His cousin Randy lives in an old plantation-style mansion in South Carolina that has in its front hallway a fantasy painting of General Grant kneeling and surrendering to Robert E. Lee. Randy is in his 80s and voted for Trump in 2016. But this November, Randy will be voting for Joe Biden! This conservative son of the South is disgusted and horrified by Trump and said “a million dollars won’t change my vote for Biden.” He’s one of the last people on Earth I expected to hear this from so it gives me a small amount of hope that we can beat Trump in November if we keep doing whatever we can: register more voters, call more potential voters, urge our friends to vote early, send money to candidates, and make sure we each have a voting plan.
Keep resisting Trump and keep working to “vote his ass out of office.”
