The suspense is over and Senator Kamala Harris is Joe Biden’s pick for VP and running mate. Harris certainly seemed to be the leading contender but in today’s political environment anything is possible. Harris brings a wealth of experience as a prosecutor, an administrator, a politician and a legislator. She also has extensive experience in security matters, serving on the Senate Homeland Security and Senate Intelligence Committees, as well as serving on the high-profile Committee on the Judiciary. Biden was smart to pick a dynamic and capable running mate with excellent debating skills and a level head. Their first national campaign event “together” is scheduled for this afternoon so we can all get a sense of their chemistry and message very soon.
Trump wasted no time in attacking Harris yesterday, repeatedly calling her “nasty” and “disrespectful”. Trump said she was the “meanest, most horrible, most disrespectful of anybody in the U.S. Senate.” Trump also said of Harris’s questioning of Brett Kavanaugh in BK’s Senate confirmation hearing, that she was “nasty to a level that was just a horrible thing.” Trump often uses the term “nasty” to describe women who intimidate him, a term that has become a gendered slur used by misogynists to indicate a woman who isn’t properly deferential to men. But more broadly, Trump’s description of Harris was a profound and perverse hypocrisy. Nobody in modern political history has been more nasty and disrespectful than Donald Trump. Nasty and disrespectful are Trump’s brand. His cult love him because he’s nasty and disrespectful to the people they hate. To accuse anyone else of those traits is laughably pathetic and blatantly hypocritical.
As the election approaches, it’s clear that a central strategy of Trump’s campaign is to demonize mail-in voting while destroying the US Postal System from within. Trump’s crony Louis DeJoy has been altering USPS policies and practices causing a slowdown in mail delivery that has dire consequences. Here’s something to remember:
Despite conservative claims about its health, the USPS had been delivering mail on a timely basis UNTIL DeJoy took over. Only after his taking the helm did reports surface of widespread slowdowns affecting people’s bills, salary checks, legal notices and medications. Any problem we’re having with USPS service is due entirely to Louis DeJoy and, ultimately, his boss Donald Trump.
Trump seems gladly willing to burn down an American institution (authorized by the Constitution) if it increases his chances of winning re-election. That’s the kind of desperate, immoral opponent we face this November.
I’ve decided to vote in person this November. In twenty years of voting in northern Dutchess County, I’ve never waited to cast my ballot for more than a few minutes. And if it’s reasonably safe to wait in a (socially distanced) line at the grocery store while wearing a mask, it’s reasonably safe to wait in line at the polling place under the same Covid rules. There are many citizens who cannot vote in person, and I implore them to get their absentee ballots as soon as possible and mail them back or deliver them as quickly as possible. It’s not only important for the local races, but it’s also important for the presidential election–we need to win by a wide margin of TOTAL votes, not just electoral votes.
Keep resisting Trump and keep working to “vote is ass out of office.”
