We learned yesterday that the secret police (apparently staffed by Customs and Border Patrol agents) confronting protesters in Portland Oregon have been ordered by Trump into Chicago, a city he loves to criticize for its gun violence. When asked, the acting head of DHS, Chad Wolf, who controls the CPB agents said of protecting federal property, “I don’t need invitations by state mayors or state governors to do our job — we’re going to do that whether they like us there or not.”
It’s natural for protesters to want to push back against an authoritarian and likely unconstitutional action by unmarked agents on federal property. But it would be wise for activists to choose other venues for protest where CBP has no authority or jurisdiction. Trump is pushing his secret police to create conflict because it bolsters his fearmongering fantasy that America is under siege from anarchists and “Antifa” who want to burn everything down and get rid of conservatives. So whatever we can do to deprive Trump of his bullshit propaganda will aid our goal of removing him from the White House.
Whoever, that’s not what happened in Portland last night. About 2,000 protesters including a large group of mothers marched to a Federal Court House and broke down the door, forcing Trump’s secret police to respond, which they did with characteristic violence, shooting tear gas and flash grenades and rubber bullets. According to locals, who have become quite savvy after 56 days of protesting, it was just another Monday night in Portland.
Challenger Joe Biden was doing his part for the resistance, releasing an excellent statement yesterday on what he would do about foreign interference in our elections if he became president, laying down the gauntlet to both Trump and Putin. Here is the core of his point:
In spite of President Trump’s failure to act, America’s adversaries must not misjudge the resolve of the American people to counter every effort by a foreign power to interfere in our democracy, whether by hacking voting systems and databases, laundering money into our political system, systematically spreading disinformation, or trying to sow doubt about the integrity of our elections.
That is why, today, I am putting the Kremlin and other foreign governments on notice. If elected president, I will treat foreign interference in our election as an adversarial act that significantly affects the relationship between the United States and the interfering nation’s government.

The coronavirus continues to rage in Trump country. Cases in some surging states like Florida seem to be leveling off but the rise in deaths is only beginning. Trump continues to push for reopening schools but we only need to look at Israel to see why it’s not a good idea to reopen schools until cases are very low while testing and contact tracing are very high. Here’s an article from Vox with a graph that shows how cases skyrocketed when schools in Israel reopened:
