In case you were unplugged from social media yesterday, our NY-19 congressman Antonio Delgado issued a new statement affirming that he would vote YES on both articles of impeachment of Trump. As the 2020 election gets closer, the chatter on social media keeps ramping up. On Twitter the #NY19 hashtag has seen an increase in use by both resistance activists and Trumpers, mostly on the subject of impeachment. Trumpers have been singling out Delgado as a vulnerable Democrat in a Trump district, while local resisters have been thanking Delgado for supporting impeachment. In the midst of this, Republican Marc Molinaro has been using the #NY19 hashtag for the first time, clearly considering a run for Congress against Delgado.
Trump spent much of his weekend lashing out. He seemed to be losing his mind as the formal impeachment vote loomed. Trump tweeted on Friday “It’s not fair that I’m being Impeached when I’ve done absolutely nothing wrong! The Radical Left, Do Nothing Democrats have become the Party of Hate. They are so bad for our Country!” Trump’s whining and self-pity naturally received a slew of mocking responses. My favorite was “You need to smile more and not get so emotional.”
But Trump had reason to frown. A Fox News poll came out yesterday that claimed 54% of Americans want Trump impeached and 50% want him impeached and removed. That’s a one-point increase from October, not a decrease as many Republicans want people to believe. In damage control mode, Trump responded immediately by criticizing Fox and claiming their numbers always favor the Democrats, which was ludicrous, like so many other Trump lies.
Trump’s latest impeachment tantrum occurred against the backdrop of a Senate poised to conduct a sham impeachment trial. Both Mitch McConnell and Lindsey Graham said over the weekend that they were ready to rush the trail through the Senate without any witnesses, testimony or documents and shut the process down quickly, having already made their minds up that they will work with Trump. Cable news and social media exploded with derision because at the beginning of a trial our Senators are required to pledge an oath that they will act as fair and impartial jurors, but it seemed McConnell and Graham were intending to betray their oaths–which had some Democrats on Sunday calling for them to recuse themselves from the process.
Activists will stage a nationwide protest this Tuesday (the eve of the full House vote) to remind people like Graham and McConnell that we know Trump is a corrupt liar who abused his office in the worst way. If you can, please find a protest near you and lend your voice. You can find details here:
Let the Republicans know they will pay a price for abandoning the rule of law and betraying our Democracy. After all, if Trump can get away with bribing a foreign nation to help him cheat an election, and then stonewall Congressional oversight in historic proportions, he might as well be a king–is that what Republicans really want? Is the destruction of democracy worth keeping a grip on power for a few more years? Shameful.
Keep resisting and keep working to “vote his ass out of office.”
