If you watched former Trump stooge Corey Lewandowski’s testimony to the House Judiciary Committee yesterday and weren’t completely outraged and fired up, please check to make sure you’re still alive. The Republicans on the committee did everything they could to obstruct the Democrats, and Lewandowski did everything he could to obstruct and hide his role in Trump’s crime of obstruction of justice. Lewandowski hid behind a bogus claim of privilege (that he was only allowed to discuss his testimony in the Mueller report) even though he has no such privilege because he was not a White House employee. It’s clear from the Mueller report that Trump tried to obstruct justice, and Lewandowski’s testimony yesterday clearly confirmed this. Lewandowski admitted that Trump dictated a note to him asking AG Jeff Sessions to un-recuse himself from the Mueller probe–which is an illegal obstruction of justice. Lewandowski was also exposed during questioning as a blatant liar, and his bad-faith appearance before the committee was obviously just another phase of Trump’s obstruction, and likely rose to the level of Contempt of Congress.
The conduct of the Republicans on the committee also was predictably shameful and disingenuous, and their utter lack of concern for Trump’s abuse of power and the aid he received from Russia exposed the rot at the heart of their party. They no longer have principles or ethics. They mocked the Committee and trivialized the abuses and scandals of Trump, having simply become a cult of personality in service of Trump and his power.
It’s been obvious from before the election of Trump that the Republican party increasingly hates Democracy and increasingly embraces Fascism. Every time a Republican uses “socialist” in a public forum to attack the Democrats, the Democrats should use the word “fascist” in response.
fascism: a political philosophy, movement, or regime (such as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition (Merriam Webster)
GOP hatred of Democracy has taken many forms, including extreme gerrymandering, voter suppression, voter purges, burdensome voter ID laws, voter intimidation, closing polling places, shortening voting hours, curtailing early voting and absentee voting, and in some cases (North Carolina) outright fraud. Republicans know their party is dying, that the demographics are going against them in a big way, that they are a numerically shrinking minority, and that their policies are increasingly unpopular and extreme–so they are willing to flaunt the law and play dirty tricks to hold onto power. They are willing to reject and destroy the foundations of the American experiment for their own greed.
This truth was reinforced two days ago by Paul Krugman in the New York Times, who penned an editorial that went to the diseased heart of today’s Republican party:
Elections are supposed to have consequences, conveying power to the winners. But when Democrats win an election, the modern G.O.P. does its best to negate the results, flouting norms and, if necessary, the law to carry on as if the voters hadn’t spoken.

The circus that Lewandowski perpetrated on Congress yesterday, aided by Republican officials, was just another chapter in this sad story. They’ve sold their souls, their scruples, and their principles for a pair of unfit Supreme Court Justices and a tax break for billionaires.
It’s not clear that Democratic leadership will have an adequate response to all of this scandalous obstruction and lawlessness. Lewandowski might be held in contempt. The other Trump officials ignoring subpoenas might be fined or threatened with jail time. But when an entire party turns its back on the law, our political process and our institutions of justice are in serious jeopardy. This is yet another reason to vote out Trump and his corrupt enablers in 2020. Four more years of this fascist destruction of our cherished institutions will be disastrous.
Keep resisting Trump and keep working to “vote his ass out of office.”
