We’ve known for a long time that Trump is a racist. We’ve suffered through countless episodes of Trump’s racism, ranging from calling Mexicans “rapists” to insisting that there were very fine people carrying torches at the Charlottesville white supremacist rally. But yesterday might have been a new low in Trump’s catastrophic tenure. Trump tweeted this to the four minority Congresswomen known in Washington as “the squad”, who include Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, Ayanna Pressley, and Ilhan Omar.
So interesting to see “Progressive” Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world (if they even have a functioning government at all), now loudly and viciously telling the people of the United States, the greatest and most powerful Nation on earth, how our government is to be run. Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came. Then come back and show us how it is done. These places need your help badly, you can’t leave fast enough. I’m sure that Nancy Pelosi would be very happy to quickly work out free travel arrangements!
“Go back to where you came” is an old racist trope, and of course three of the four Congresswomen attacked by Trump were born here in the United States. The fourth, Ilhan Omar, was born in Somalia and came here with her family as refugees seeking asylum.
Cable news programs, newspapers, and pundits on social media set aside any sugar coating or minimizing yesterday and described Trump’s attack as racist. And we should expect our political and cultural leaders to do the same. But Trump’s tweet is part of an ongoing strategy. He’s trying to (1) energize his base by flaunting his racism and misogyny, while also (2) stirring up trouble between the squad and speaker Pelosi and (3) pitting hard left progressives against moderate Democrats. On one hand, we have to denounce Trump’s racism and destruction of political norms. And we have to denounce Mitch McConnell and the feckless GOP for their indefensible silence. But on the other hand, we can’t let Trump’s slurs and attacks distract us from the work we have to do to kick him and the corrupt GOP out of office in 2020.
Here’s an interesting twitter thread from Republican strategist and “Never Trumper” Rick Wilson (@TheRickWilson) yesterday:
There’s a very passionate reaction to be blasting his message to suburban women voters who broke from the GOP in 2016 and 2018, and ONLY in the swing states. They don’t want socialism. (Sorry, Squad). They want decency and sanity. They oppose cruelty and brutality. Make this race a referendum on Trump. I do not care if you get 103% turnout in California. I care that you understand the rules of the game, and the only rules of the game are this: Win the Electoral College. His racist shitbag act helps you win the swing states if you can just not step on your genitals.‘s racisty racism this morning. It’s justified, but pointless. Let me remind you: there is no bottom. There is no better Trump. It’s never a joke, or 87-dimensional chess, or some clever strategery. The point you’re missing is that he cannot be shamed. He is immune to moral suasion. He really *is* that much of a monstrous ass. It should stand as a reminder that he’s going to play to the white nat alt-reich base and you’re going to scream about it while you should
Wilson makes some great points. It doesn’t matter if Biden or Harris or Warren or Klobuchar is ahead of Trump by ten points. It only matters if the Democratic nominee is ahead of Trump by ten points in Pennsylvania and Minnesota and Wisconsin and Florida. The Electoral College is key.
Trump can’t be shamed into apologizing or changing or admitting fault. He is that much of a callous sadist. His brand is cruelty because that’s what his cult wants from him. And that’s who he is. But they alone can’t elect him. We have to appeal to swing voters and independents. And we have to register new voters in swing states and make sure our voters show up to the polls here in NY-19.
As we get closer to the election we have to make our efforts count. Help our district, and help in the swing states if you can. It’s going to be a tough battle but the fate of our nation depends on the outcome.
Keep resisting and keep working to “vote his ass out of office.”
