Two extremely troubling things happened yesterday.
Alabama passed a law effectively criminalizing abortion. The New York Times summarized the legislation, which goes to the Alabama Governors’ desk soon and is expected to be signed:
The legislation bans abortions at every stage of pregnancy and criminalizes the procedure for doctors, who could be charged with felonies and face up to 99 years in prison. It includes an exception for cases when the mother’s life is at serious risk, but not for cases of rape or incest

The bill was designed to be a direct challenge to Roe v. Wade and will almost surely make its way to the Supreme Court, where it could provide the five conservative activist justices their best opportunity to overturn Roe and permit individual states to outlaw abortion. It’s a five alarm fire for activists in the wake of the recent SCOTUS ruling to overturn a 40-year precedent in the Franchise Tax Board of California vs Hyatt decision. It’s obvious to observers that this court doesn’t give a damn about precedent even though each of the justices paid lip service to stare decisis during their confirmation hearings. In other words, they lied hoping to someday have a chance to undo Roe for the sake of their religious beliefs (while pretending overturning Roe has to do with about abstract constitutional theory).
Also yesterday, it was reported that the Trump regime is getting ready to send 120,000 troops to the Middle East. Trump was asked about it by reporters and gave a typically dishonest dodge-of-an-answer: “I think it’s fake news, OK? Now, would I do that? Absolutely. But we have not planned for that. Hopefully we’re not going to have to plan for that. If we did that, we would send a hell of a lot more troops than that.” In other words, “Yes we’re considering starting a war with Iran but saying that now would make me look like a heartless, manipulative chickenhawk so I want to wait until we can manufacture an excuse that our cult will embrace.”
Trump should have to go to Congress to get authorization to try a regime change in Iran but he would possibly get voted down so Trump may try to take unilateral action, which would be a horrific abuse of power. So we have to be ready to mobilize if he tries to start a bogus war. Trump is enough of a psycho that it’s easy to imagine him starting a war (A) to distract from his many scandals and possible crimes, and (B) to look tough to bolster his bottomless ego and make his cult feel more powerful. We need to make it clear to our elected reps that Congress must give its consent for Trump to go to war.
Finally, TODAY is an Indivisible statewide call-in day for voting reform, especially rights restoration for parolees. A bill will be presented to the State Assembly on the 22nd and Indivisible wants our reps to hear from us beforehand, so they are urging activists to call in today between 9am and 5pm. Below is a link to an info sheet with call scripts. You’ll have to find the phone numbers for your specific state Senators and Assembly Reps.
Keep resisting and working to “vote his ass out of office.”
