Attorney General Barr gave his summary of the Mueller report yesterday and the result was both troubling and galling. It appears that Mueller was unable to find compelling evidence of a conspiracy between Trump and Russia, which was expected, but it also appears Mueller gave no opinion on the guilt or innocence of Trump regarding obstruction of justice:
“…while this report does not conclude that the President committed a crime, it also does not exonerate him.”
Instead Mueller left it to Trump lackey and self-confessed Russia skeptic Barr to draw his own legal conclusions, which he did quickly:
I have concluded that the evidence developed during the Special Counsel’s investigation is not sufficient to establish that the President committed an obstruction-of-justice offense.
Trump and his cult took Barr’s interpretation as “total exoneration” despite the fact that Trump is surrounded by lying felons, many of whom are on their way to jail, and despite the fact that we still don’t know what is in the Mueller report, only a few lines lifted by Barr and Barr’s summary–which has to be seen as a suspect and highly partisan document. Here’s an excellent analysis by E. J. Dionne in the Washington Post:
Now it is up to lawmakers to get the actual report and let us know exactly what Mueller found. So we have to keep pressing for the report to be fully released. Anything less will imply that Barr and Trump are hiding something. It’s possible that nothing Earth-shaking will come of it, but we deserve the truth. And we should also remember that there are several other ongoing investigations of Trump and his circle that were farmed out by Mueller because they were beyond the scope of his mandate.
Even if the actual Mueller report turns out to be damning to Trump, the GOP has always been highly unlikely to join in an effort to impeach him. We have to work to mobilize our voters and broadcast the fact that Trump is an unethical, lying, divisive, petty, tyrannical, mean-spirited, incompetent coward who insults dead war heroes and rarely does the hard work of president, preferring instead to golf and watch cable TV and tweet at private citizens. He’s an embarrassment and a disgrace. And we have to vote him out along with all of the corrupt toadies in his administration, including AG Barr, before they destroy what’s left of our justice system and institutions of Democracy.
