More insanity in Washington yesterday. It almost feels like the wheels are about to fall off the Republican clown car.
First, the heads of our intelligence community testified to Congress on Tuesday that ISIS was still a threat, Iran was complying with the nuclear deal, and global warming was a national security threat. In the aftermath of their testimony Donald Trump tweeted yesterday morning:
The Intelligence people seem to be extremely passive and naive when it comes to the dangers of Iran. They are wrong! When I became President Iran was making trouble all over the Middle East, and beyond. Since ending the terrible Iran Nuclear Deal, they are MUCH different, but a source of potential danger and conflict. They are testing Rockets (last week) and more, and are coming very close to the edge. There economy is now crashing, which is the only thing holding them back. Be careful of Iran. Perhaps Intelligence should go back to school!
Not surprising from the man who admitted to knowing more than our generals, knowing more than our diplomats, and knowing more than our career intelligence officers. (And he’s a stable genius with the best words.) But his ridiculous tweet generated a lot of consternation and push-back from members of his own party, several of whom said they would continue to trust the assessments of our Intel agencies (over trusting Trump). None of this friction would be happening if not for Democratic control of House committees that can set the agenda and ask tough questions of agency heads and others.
Second, Sarah Huckabee Sanders admitted in an interview yesterday that she believes God “wanted Trump to become President.” Aside from the fact that it’s profoundly arrogant to claim to know the mind of God, any creator of the Universe who championed a lying, cheating, fraudulent, vulgar scumbag like Trump to lead our nation is not a God worthy of worship. Period, full stop. Sanders and her evangelical kin have so destroyed any claim to the moral high-ground that it begs the question whether they have any understanding of the tenets of their religion at all. Their support of Trump reeks of hypocrisy, and their actions, policies, and attitudes seem entirely antithetical to any broadly accepted characterization of Christ. But they are so desperate to prop up Trump’s legitimacy in the face of so many scandals, lies and crimes that they are only left with appeals to the supernatural.
Finally, Senator Mitch McConnell complained yesterday about a bill sponsored by Democrats in the House that would, among other things, make election day a Federal holiday (HR 1). McConnell said it was a “power grab”, characterizing the legislation as the “Democrat Politician Protection Act.” It couldn’t be clearer that McConnell and many other Republicans view real democracy as a threat to their power, and seek to reduce the number of Americans who vote. It’s a tacit admission that the GOP brand has become toxic, mainly because their ideas and policies are so repulsive to so many citizens, and the only way they can continue to hold power is to cheat and game the system. This is where we’ve arrived in the era of Trump: a major political party openly and admittedly working against voting. If that’s not unAmerican, nothing is.
All three of these stories are tied to the new era of congressional oversight ushered in by the midterms. Trump and his enablers are less and less able to sell their BS without getting called out on TV and raked over the coals on social media. Watch their desperation continue to grow.
Stay indoors if possible, stay warm and keep resisting…
