While Congress was pointing fingers at each other and trying to keep the government open, the Trump administration continued like a quiet wrecking ball to alter and rescind government regulations.

Oligarchs love to keep other oligarchs wealthy, and Trump give a giant wet kiss to his golf buddies in Big Oil by slapping a 30% tariff on imported solar panels, which has sent the renewable sector reeling.  What better way to deliver a death knell to a choking planet than put a stop to one of the most important technological developments of the decade? Shut out the competition (whose costs keep getting lower) so the extraction industries can die a much longer, slower and more polluting death.

Trump himself has no governing philosophy, other than increasing his wealth.  And by increasing the wealth of other billionaires and huge multi-national corporations, Trump ensures big campaign donations in 2020.  If it means destroying the planet or making the USA less safe or tossing millions off of health insurance, he doesn’t care as long as the oligarchy is wealthier.  And a report today by Oxfam shows that more than 8 out of every 10 dollars of wealth created last year went to the richest 1%.

The 1% grabbed 82% of all wealth created in ’17

We’re at the point where liberal billionaires spend their money to cure disease or decrease global poverty while vastly wealthier conservatives essentially buy media platforms (Fox, Time, WSJ, NY Post, Sinclair, Clear Channel, Breitbart) to spread propaganda and stoke fear, manipulating the masses (along with help from Russian oligarchs) to vote for useful idiots like Donald Trump.

The constant sanctimony and faux patriotism of oligarchs like the Murdochs and Kochs and Mercers is nothing more than a shield for their endless greed and deep hatred of anyone or anything that might put limits on their ability to rape the earth or defraud customers or poison our water.

The midterms this November are so vitally important to stopping the rise of the oligarchs and beginning to narrow the gap between rich and poor.  A democracy can’t last long amid a flood of constant lies and propaganda, especially when blared through the bullhorns of Fox or Clear Channel.  Our challenge is to mobilize and get out the vote.  The opposition will have a lot of money to spend, but we can out-organize their money if enough of our friends and neighbors get involved and pitch in.  It’s not too late to fight back.
