Bad enough that Trump’s racism erupted during a meeting with Senators in the instantly infamous “shithole” comment. But yesterday, according to the Wall Street Journal, we discovered that in October 2016, a month before the election, Trump’s lawyer made a $130k hush payment to a porn star who had a fling with Trump in 2006, a year after his marriage to Melania.

Some TV pundits seemed shocked, but this is the Trump many New Yorkers came to know in the 1980s and 1990s–a sleazy, superficial, unfaithful Lothario.  Despite his inherited wealth, he’s always been a Manhattan wannabe trying to hobnob with the old-money socialites but never amounting to more than a punch line, in part because he can’t stop being a dirtbag.  If anyone is shocked, they haven’t been paying attention.

The bigger story here is not Trump’s disgusting character, but the pack of GOP leaders who don’t seem to care.  It’s becoming a recurring theme–we can never again let the GOP pretend to occupy the moral high ground.  They sold their souls and their principles and their honor to pass legislation that helps enrich their billionaire overlords while overlooking the historically unfit and incompetent liar in the White House.

California Republican Congressman Darrell Issa recently announced that he won’t seek re-election, presumably due in part to constant harassment and protests from the Indivisible movement. In a similar manner we need to continue to hold John Faso accountable for his failed moral leadership when it comes to Trump.  Why won’t he quickly and forcefully denounce Trump’s racist statements, or his undignified behavior?  We can never let Faso or the GOP off the hook.  And we must stay focused and committed to replacing Faso this November.  It’s the first step toward eventually replacing Trump and putting this repulsive, sordid chapter of our political history behind us.
